Research

 Silvia Bruti has carried out research in several areas of English linguistics, e.g., text linguistics, discourse analysis, ESP, pragmatics, corpus linguistics, stylistics, multimodality, TESOL, language learning and acquisition, (audiovisual) translation.  She started from exploring topics in discourse analysis and pragmatics, such as discourse markers (1999, 2001), phoric relations as cohesive devices in texts (2004a) and paraphrase (2004b, 2004c, 2005).

She has then devoted to translation studies by combining several frameworks and perspectives, notably corpus linguistics. She has concentrated in particular on cross-cultural pragmatics and audio-visual translation, authoring  internationally relevant publications on conversational routines and speech acts (2019a, 2019b) and two book-length studies on the translation of politeness (2013) and on the challenges of subtitling from English into Italian (2017). She has also extended the investigation on telecinematic language to account for the advantages of using audiovisual texts in language teaching contexts (2015, 2016, 2018). More recently she has worked extensively on the features of meaning making in different genres (2016, 2020) through the tools of corpus linguistics and multimodal discourse analysis. Her publications are mainly international, with several contributions in Italian first rate scientific journals (fascia A). She has received excellent evaluations for her research from the University of Pisa for two consecutive years (2018 and 2020) and from VQR 2011-2014 (Pisa ranked first for English linguistics).
