I am a Professor of English Language and Translation. I graduated in English Language and Literature at the University of Pisa in 1993, from which I received a PhD in English Studies in 1997. After working for five years at the University of Pavia, in 2005, I started teaching at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature of the University of Pisa. I am currently a member of the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics and the Director of the University Language Centre.

I am a member of the Italian Association of English Studies (AIA), the Italian Association of Applied Linguistics (AItLA) and the International Pragmatics Association (IPrA), and I am part of the scientific committee of several scientific journals. I have researched text linguistics, pragmatics (also historical), and applied linguistics, with particular attention to corpus linguistics, translation (especially audiovisual) and the teaching of English as a foreign language.

I have published widely in these fields and participated in numerous national and international conferences. I have edited several volumes, e.g. on reformulation processes and paraphrase (2004), lexicography and translation (with Cella and Foschi Albert 2009), on recent developments in audiovisual translation in Europe (2012 with Di Giovanni) and subtitling (2015 with Perego), on the use of corpus linguistics in translation (2013 with Baños-Piñero and Zanotti), on ethnicity and translation (2014 with Valdeón and Zanotti), on stylistics (2016 with Ferrari).

My research has focused on cross-cultural pragmatics (English vs Italian) and the translation of audiovisual texts, i.e. the translation of compliments, some conversational routines and forms of address in interlinguistic subtitles and dubbing, and the representation of speech phenomena in film dialogue and translation (e.g. stuttering with Zanotti 2018). More recently, I have investigated the potential of audiovisual texts for language teaching and the representation of orality in telecinematic dialogue and its translation. Among my recent publications are a monograph on politeness in translation (2013) and a co-authored volume on interlinguistic subtitling (with Buffagni and Garzelli 2017).
