Prin (MUR – BANDO 2022): THE SPANISH DIALOGUE OF THE GOLDEN AGE AND THE ITALIAN MODELS: TRANSLATIONS, REWRITINGS, FORMS AND EVOLUTION OF THE GENRE.

Unit 2 (Pisa University): Dialogue as ‘discursive tradition’ and source of metalinguistic contents

The influence of Italian models is mostly observed in the tendency to imitation of natural or realistic language in vulgar, in order to mimetically reproduce the conversazione. Hence the opportunity –a further novelty in relation to the consolidated studies on the dialogue genre– to open the research to the study of interlocution, also with an enunciative perspective, to be extended to the philologic, historical and linguistic verifications made necessary by the texts, with the purpose of clarifying, through the study of the enunciative and argumentative structures, how “discourse” orients the fictional an functional component of the text, and namely, how it becomes relevant to its own pragmatic dimension. As a matter of fact, the Pisa unit of the project intends to study dialogue as a semiotic interaction, both as formulation and transcription of an act of communication, and as specific discursive genre, with particular attention to the presence of pragmatic structures which imply orality and its mimetic textualization. This part of the project will also deal with the description of the conversational implications and the situational variables intervening in the various textual manifestations, in order to determine, on the one hand, the parameters on which the degree of conversational mimesis is based and, on the other hand, the historical and linguistic implications that such discursive structures involve, without neglecting the translational considerations that have been or can be encouraged in a contrastive and diachronic perspective of Italian and Spanish (from source-text to target-text, and vice versa). Furthermore, the observation of the discursive and pragmalinguistic structures of oral textualization cannot disregard a historical and cultural contextualization considering both the linguistic conscience of the interlocutors and of their spokespeople, also in the perspective of a polyphonic enunciation. The second articulation of the study will examine the use of this specific discursive genre as a vehicle for the transmission of metalinguistic contents, both as an eminently didactic-expositive instrument and as exemplifying frame, in relation to the intellectual history which has influenced, since linguistics’ and vulgar grammatography earliest days, also the Spanish language teaching. In this double track of research, particular relevance will be given to the study of the reasons behind the choice of dialogue as a doctrinaire or ideologic device, or as expression of specific communicative situations inherent to the uses of the language, as well as the didactic functions translation exercises in the case of mimetic dialogues, bilingual texts or conversation manuals.
