Filippo Costa received the M.Sc. degree in telecommunication engineering and the Ph.D. degree in applied electromagnetism from the University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy, in 2006 and 2010, respectively. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Pisa.
In 2009, he was a Visiting Researcher at the Department of Radio Science and Engineering, Helsinki University of Technology, TKK (now Aalto University), Finland. During the period 2015-2017, he was several times a short-term Visiting Researcher at Grenoble Institute of Technology, Valance, France and at University Rovira I Virgili, Tarragona, Spain.
His research interests include metamaterials, metasurfaces, antennas, electromagnetic characterization of materials and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).
He has contributed to EU and national projects, including H2020 EMERGENT and PRIN GREEN TAGS, and has led regional projects involving startups, supporting technology development and industrial translation. He has also collaborated with several industrial partners. Within the FoReLab “Departments of Excellence 2023–2027” project, he coordinates the Smart Material Devices research line, supporting access to advanced additive-manufacturing and RF/microwave characterization facilities up to 140 GHz.
He serves as an Associate Editor for the journals IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION, IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, IEEE Sensors Letters, Scientific Reports, Electronics and Sensors.
He was among the outstanding reviewers of the journal IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021) and IEEE ANTENNAS AND WIRELESS PROPAGATION LETTERS (2017, 2018). He was among the outstanding editors of the journal IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION (2026) and IEEE ANTENNAS AND WIRELESS PROPAGATION LETTERS (2024,2026).
One of his papers has been recognized as one of the most 21 influential papers in the history of the journal IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION.
He was recipient of the Young Scientist Award of the URSI International Symposium on Electromagnetic Theory, URSI General Assembly and URSI AT-RASC in 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively.
He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
