SUMMARY OF RESEARCH TOPICS AND CURRENT PROJECTS (March 2024)
Her current research activities are focused mainly on industrial processes with reference to the recovery/valorisation of industrial by-products/wastes, treatment of polluting gaseous/liquid effluents, carbon capture, development and processing of biodegradable/compostable thermoplastic compounds and composites for commodities, plastic recycling, environmental sustainability analysis of product/process by LCA (Life Cycle assessment) methodology. These activities are documented by more than 180 scientific publications in international journals and national/international conference proceedings. Many of the research activities have been and are conducted in collaboration with public and private research agencies or Italian and foreign research centres and universities (MIT, Boston, USA; Universidad Austral de Chile; EGE University, TR; Politecnica Salesiana University, Ecuador).
Recently, she was Unit leader of national and international projects such as PRISMAMED (Interreg maritime Italy – France) on the mechanical recycling of discharged fishing nets; PHA (funded by Tuscany region) on the use of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) in biodegradable composite materials for marine/coastal and agricultural/nursery applications; PRO-BIOPLAST (Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and University of Pisa) on the use of protein- and polysaccharide-rich biomass as a resource for more sustainable bioplastics. Currently, she is coordinator of 2 National projects: AMOR-BIO (PRIN 2022 code 2022S2Z9XP) and SUSTAINED (PNRR MOST closed call) on bio-nanocomposites biodegradable in natural environments and the use of recycled fishing nets for automotive applications, respectively. She is also Unit Leader of 2 National projects: bio-FURther (PRIN PNRR 2022 code P20227JXT8), BOOSTER (PNRR MOST); and 2 EU projects: Revoc4LIFE (LIFE20 ENV/IT/000688) and ELEGTEC (Erasmus+ GA101128907). In her career, she has successfully supervised 6 PhD thesis, more than 60 MSc theses, 7 fellowships, 5 post-doc fellowships and 5 collaboration contracts.
