1) Electrical properties of matter:

  • General properties of materials, polarization phenomena, propagation through dispersive materials, properties of conductors (surface impedance);
  • Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) with Matlab sessions;
  • Dispersion models (Debye, Lorentz, Drude);
  • Surface Plasmoons and sensing applications;

2) Periodic structures:

  • Theoretical basis of periodic structures (1D, 2D and 3D lattices);
  • Brillouin diagram for 2D structures;
  • Introduction to Photonic crystals and their applications;
  • 1D photonic bandgap structures with Matlab sessions;
  • Introduction to metasurfaces and applications;
  • Circuit model analysis of metasurfaces with Matlab sessions;
  • Circuit model analysis of Artificial Impedance Surfaces (AIS) with Matlab sessions;

3) Characterization of materials and sensors:

  • Methods for measuring the dielectric and magnetic properties of materials (resonant and wideband) including experimental activies and Matlab sessions;
  • Wireless radio frequency sensors for Non Destructive Testing (NDT).
