Claudio Scali was born in 1951 in Cecina (Livorno); married with Vincenza, one son and one daughter (and three granddaughters).
After attending the Liceo Scientifico “E. Fermi” in Cecina, graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1975 from the University of Pisa with a thesis on “On line Control of Combustion Chambers”. Assistant Professor from 1978 to 1983, then Associate Professor up to 2001. Since then CS is Full Professor at the Chemical Engineering Section of the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering of the University of Pisa (SSD ING-IND/26).
Teaching activity in the area of Process Control (Master students in Chemical Engineering) and of Chemical Plant Design (Master students in Industrial Chemistry). In the past CS gave courses of Automatic Control for Aerospace Engineering, for Naval Academy students in Livorno and courses of Process Control for Master students in Energy Engineering.
CS Research activity involves Modeling and Control of Chemical Processes, Robust Process Control, Optimization of Batch polymerization reactors, Process Identification by Relay Techniques, Evaluation of Air Quality in Industrial Areas, Performance Monitoring of Industrial Plants, Advanced Diagnosis of Control Loops. The last two topics constitute main actual research interest, with new insights towards Cloud Monitoring, as application of Industry 4.0 technologies. Also, cooperation on these issues is going on with ENI R&M and with ENEL Research and Innovation.
CS is author of more than 180 papers (International Journals and Conferences; see selected list).
CS has been Visiting associate at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pasadena, CA (1985-87) and Visiting Professor at Laboratoire des Systèmes Automatiques (LSA), Université de Picardie, Amiens (F) in 1996.
Associate Editor of Journal of Process Control (2001-2012); member of the Scientific Commitee Chemical Process Control of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and of International Program Committee of IFAC-DYCOPS and IFAC-ADCHEM conferences; Technical Associate Editor for: IFAC – World Congress (Milano-2011), ADICONIP (Hiroshima-2012), IFAC-DYCOPS (Mumbai-2013). Organizer of the IFAC-ADCHEM conference in Pisa (2000).
Member of the National Organization Committee (NOC) of next IFAC-ADCHEM (to be held in Venice, 2021).
CS has been President of the PhD Council in Chemical Engineering and Materials from 2009 to 2016. CS is the Representative member of the University of Pisa in the Administrative Board of Consorzio Polo Tecnologico Magona (since 2012) and has been President of CPTM (2012-2016).
CS is President of CLUI AS (Club Utilizzatori Italiani Automazione e Strumentazione), since 2017, with special emphasis on training and updating of industrial personnel on Industry 4.0 issues.
