Born 1951 in Cecina, married, one son and one daughter (and three granddaughters).

Graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1975 from the University of Pisa. Assistant Professor (1978-1983), Associate Professor (1983-2001), Full Professor at the Chemical Engineering Section of the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering of the University of Pisa (SSD ING-IND/26).

President of the PhD Council in Chemical Engineering and Materials (2009-2016). Representative member of the University of Pisa in the Administrative Board of Consorzio Polo Tecnologico Magona (since 2012) and President  of CPTM (2012-2016). President of CLUI AS (Club Utilizzatori Italiani Automazione e Strumentazione), since 2017.

Teaching activity: Process Control, Chemical Plant Design.

Main research interests: Modeling and Control of Chemical Processes, Robust Process Control, Performance Monitoring of Industrial Plants, Advanced Diagnosis of Control Loops. Author of more than 180 papers (International Journals and Conferences; see selected list).

Visiting associate at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pasadena, CA (1985-87); Visiting Professor at Laboratoire des Systèmes Automatiques (LSA),  Université de Picardie, Amiens (F) in 1996.

Associate Editor of Journal of Process Control (2001-2012); member of the Scientific Commitee Chemical Process Control of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and of International Program Committee  of IFAC-DYCOPS and IFAC-ADCHEM conferences; Technical Associate Editor for: IFAC – World Congress (Milano-2011), ADICONIP (Hiroshima-2012), IFAC-DYCOPS (Mumbai-2013). Organizer of the IFAC-ADCHEM conference in Pisa (2000);  NOC member of IFAC-ADCHEM  (to be held in Venice, 2021).

Research cooperation with CLUI AS for training and updating about performance monitoring of industrial control systems. Cooperation with ENI R&M and with ENEL Research and Innovation, about  research activity in advanced diagnostics and Industry 4.0 framework.
