Can we design technologies with their second life in mind?

In this recent and interesting article, Researchers at the University of Tartu have demonstrated that old Google Nexus smartphones — some over 10 years old — can be repurposed into low-power micro data centers for running real-time AI tasks.

The study explores how clusters of these smartphones, originally designed for personal use, can be reconfigured to run containerized workloads and support edge computing scenarios in the Internet of Things. These include computer vision applications like species counting in marine research.

While this is not a new concept, it’s a powerful reminder:

In robotics, we often discard sensors, boards, and processors when they’re no longer state-of-the-art — but they could still be valuable in other contexts: prototyping, education, or low-risk deployments.

Maybe it’s time to start thinking of “end of life” not as disposal, but as design for reuse.

Exploring similar strategies in robotics could be a promising direction — something worth keeping an eye on in the months ahead.

No big answers here — just a question worth asking.
