Scientific research is at the core of the institutional mission of a botanic garden. The main fields of investigations in which the Botanic Garden and Museum of the University of Pisa is involved are:
- Systematics, Taxonomy and Nomenclature
- Biodiversity and Floristics
- Phytochemistry
- Conservation and Climate Change
- History of Botany
The most productive cooperation of the botanic garden is with the PLANTSEED Lab of the Department of Biology (University of Pisa).
In 2018 we implemented in our botanic garden a collection displaying some specimens involved in research activities.

The species pertaining to the collection ‘Plants in research’ can be explored through our online documentation system, U-plant DISCOVER.
