I received my MSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2005, and my PhD in Biomaterials in 2009. During my research training, I carried out research stays at several international institutions, including Tampere University of Technology, Finland, the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, and the University of Minho, Portugal.
I subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher on several research projects at the National Research Council of Italy, CNR, and at the University of Pisa. In September 2019, I was appointed Junior Researcher at the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry, University of Pisa, where I became Senior Researcher in January 2022. Since January 2025, I have held the position of Associate Professor of Industrial Chemistry in the same department.
In May 2026, I obtained the National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor of Industrial Chemistry, CHEM/A04.
My research interests mainly focus on the study of synthetic and natural polymers for the development of polymeric materials for biomedical, pharmaceutical, and other industrial applications. I am co-author of more than 80 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed international journals, nine book chapters, four patents, and several invited oral presentations at international conferences. According to the Scopus database, my publications have received over 4,200 citations, with an h-index of 36.
I was included in the Stanford/Elsevier list, which highlights the top 2% of scientists cited globally in 2022, 2023, and 2024. I am member of the advisory board of Polymers for Advanced Technologies (PAT) and the Editorial Board-Section Macromolecules of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, as well as Associate editor of Frontiers in Biomaterials – section Biomaterials Sience for Regenerative Therapies. I have been involved in the Expert Panel ST5 — Synthetic Chemistry and Materials Science of the National Science Centre, Poland, serving as Chair for the OPUS and OPUS-LAP funding schemes in 2024 and for the PRELUDIUM scheme in 2023. Since 2020, I have also served as a panel member for the OPUS, OPUS-LAP, SONATA, SONATA BIS, PRELUDIUM, and PRELUDIUM BIS funding schemes.
