Research

Research activities have been focused on the fields of Reverse Engineering, Computer Aided Design and Engineering, Image Processing for Computer Vision, 3D medical Imaging and Design for Additive Manufacturing.

3D structured light-based techniques for the acquisition and modelling of complex 3D shapes in industrial and biomedical contexts have been developed. Several customized acquisition systems have been designed and developed with the aim at measuring objects in different fields. The hardware of the systems was based on the use of multimedia projectors and digital cameras. Calibration techniques of intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the optical devices has been developed and assessed.

CAD-CAE methodologies for the accurate modelling of human anatomies have been developed and used for diagnostic purposes and to support clinical treatment planning. In this context, a considerable research effort has been focused on the reconstruction of maxilla-facial anatomies through the integration of optical and tomographic data with the aim at designing and optimizing patient-specific devices and treatments.

Current research interests are oriented toward the Design for Additive Manufacturing through the use and the development of 3D printers, characterized by a high level of setup flexibility, to be used for challenging applications both for industrial and biomedical field.
