{"id":69,"date":"2016-01-19T16:01:42","date_gmt":"2016-01-19T15:01:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/people.unipi.it\/gennaro_pescitelli\/?page_id=69"},"modified":"2026-06-12T09:31:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T07:31:19","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/people.unipi.it\/gennaro_pescitelli\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Our research addresses the stereochemistry of chiral molecules and materials, combining chiroptical spectroscopies (ECD, VCD, CPL) with quantum-chemical calculations to determine configuration, conformation and aggregation modes.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"my-4\">\n<div class=\"card mb-4\" style=\"border-radius:14px\">\n<div class=\"card-body\">\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/people.unipi.it\/gennaro_pescitelli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2021\/01\/films.jpg\" alt=\"Chiral thin films\" style=\"width:350px;max-width:40%;float:left;margin:0 18px 10px 0;border-radius:10px\"><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"card-title\">Chiral materials<\/h4>\n<p>Conjugated organic polymers \u2014 PPVs, PPEs and polythiophenes \u2014 are \u201cmaterials with unique properties, not otherwise observable\u201d (Alan Heeger, 2000 Nobel in Chemistry), used in photovoltaics, OLEDs, sensors and field-effect transistors. Chirality in \u03c0-conjugated materials adds a further dimension, opening the way to circularly-polarized OLEDs, quantum optics, anticounterfeiting and spintronics.<\/p>\n<p>Electronic CD (ECD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are ideal techniques for characterizing thin films of these materials and their multiple aggregation pathways. The <strong>CD@Pisa<\/strong> group has developed several \u03c0-conjugated compounds with exceptional chiroptical properties, including giant ECD signals and non-reciprocal ECD and CPL spectra, which invert sign upon sample flipping. The calculation of ECD, VCD and CPL spectra is a particularly significant example. While relatively few of them are crystalline, almost all contain at least one chromophore and provide measurable ECD spectra. Krohn) \u2014 <em>Chirality<\/em> 2009<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"card mb-4\" style=\"border-radius:14px\">\n<div class=\"card-body\">\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/people.unipi.it\/gennaro_pescitelli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2026\/06\/VCD.jpg\" alt=\"VCD spectra of Co(II) complexes\" style=\"width:700px;max-width:45%;float:right;margin:0 0 10px 18px;border-radius:10px\"><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"card-title\">Exceptional chiroptical activity of Co(II) complexes<\/h4>\n<p>Chiral cobalt(II) complexes with high-spin d<sup>7<\/sup> configuration exhibit a continuous superspectrum of absorption and CD bands spanning the UV, vis, NIR and IR regions. Especially remarkable are VCD spectra featuring exceptional intensity due to the coupling between ligand vibrations and metal-centered low-lying electronic states. We designed and characterized several families of Co(II) complexes with record VCD dissymmetry g-factors up to 0.2.
