{"id":112,"date":"2023-05-26T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T11:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/people.unipi.it\/alessandro_mandoli\/?p=112"},"modified":"2023-05-26T16:57:07","modified_gmt":"2023-05-26T14:57:07","slug":"please-do-not-bite-me-on-the-neck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/people.unipi.it\/alessandro_mandoli\/please-do-not-bite-me-on-the-neck\/","title":{"rendered":"Please, do not bite me on the neck &#8211; Update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The search for long-lasting and effective insect repellents devoid of unwanted side-effects, like toxicity and unpleasant smell, is an important goal towards the prevention of vector-borne diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a joint effort with the Universities of Florence and Rome &#8220;La Sapienza&#8221;, coordinated by Prof. Francesca R. Dani, some hydroxylated cyclic acetals from natural or synthetic carbonyl precursors were shown to be  new repellents against the mosquito species <em>Aedes albopictus<\/em> and <em>Anopheles gambiae<\/em>. The best performing compounds provided extended protection time, at much lower dosing than the widely employed DEET amide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results of this work were recently published in Wiley and ACS journals,[1,2] and commented by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/science-and-technology\/2023\/01\/25\/a-better-way-of-keeping-mosquitoes-at-bay-is-under-development\">The Economist<\/a><\/em> and<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2023\/may\/07\/mosquitoes-repellant-bite-summer-science-medical-research\">The Guardian<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[1] Iovinella, I.; Caputo, B.; Cobre, P.; Manica, M.; Mandoli, A.; Dani, F.
